Chapter 13 – Mist of the Falls

To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of years, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be.

Tuesday April 28

Jules was watching Alex sleep. Last night’s lovemaking was slow and tender, yet full of heightened yearning and arousal. Alex woke a little later with Jules cupping her breast, soft fingers stroking her nipple. She pulled Jules closer and murmured, “I thought I was imagining this.”

“No, it’s real. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Then what did you mean?” Alex whispered, already turned on.

“I can’t keep my hands from you. I don’t want to stop touching you.”

Alex found Jules’ mouth with her own kissing her deeply. Their mutual desire and passion washed over them and merged with the dappled sunlight streaking through the window.

Sophie, Rick and Alex laid out the Tuesday morning buffet; French toast, scrambled eggs, cut up fruit and ham. Claire was due down at the barn around 10:00 a.m., so Alex would only be able to get in an hour with her.

“Claire let’s meet right after breakfast, so you can get down to the barn by 10:00 a.m.. Then we’ll get together again around 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. Will that work for you?” Alex asked.

“Yup, that would be great,” responded Claire. “By the way, no flashbacks or nightmares last night.”

“Glad to hear that. I think just the fact that you were willing to suffer an episode signals great progress.”

Rick had already eaten, excused himself and gotten halfway through the kitchen, when persistent knocking on the door got everyone’s attention. Sophie went to see who it was. As soon as Rick heard Sophie raise her voice, he turned and flew through the dining room and great room to encounter Sophie and Keith Woods engaged in heated conversation. “It’s none of your god damn business, you, you misogynist! Now get the hell off of my property,” Sophie yelled, still in control of herself, but on the brink of a total melt down.

“It is my business, you hardheaded—”

He stopped whatever he was going to say when he saw Rick come through the door.

“What’s going on? We have guests inside, Woods.” Rick attempted to be the voice of reason, though he hated Woods as much as Sophie.

“Look here, Rick. I stopped by as part of my fiduciary responsibility to the bank to see how things were going. It seems that you’ve been able to clear all of the back payments and I wanted to know if this trend could be expected to continue,” said Woods heatedly.

Sophie, daggers flying from her eyes, took a step closer to Woods, her face only a foot from his.
